According to a report from Studyportals, Australia is the only major study destination that saw an increase in international student interest in the first few months of 2025. Other countries are seeing a drop:

· In Canada, student interest dropped by 33%.

· In the UK and the USA, interest stayed the same or went down.

· In Australia, student demand went up by 8% overall.

More students are looking at Australia for their undergraduate programs (bachelor’s degrees). Undergraduate interest rose by 9%, even though there was a small drop of 13% in postgraduate (master’s) course interest. This shows that Australia is becoming a top choice for many students around the world.

In March 2025, Australia received over 24,000 student visa applications for higher education. This is the highest number ever recorded for that month. Earlier in the year, in January and February, application numbers were low, but now they are quickly increasing. This shows that students are once again interested in studying in Australia.

Universities Are Growing Too

This rise in student numbers is helping Australian universities recover financially. For example, the Australian Catholic University saw a 76% increase in international students in 2024. Because of this, they went from a $35 million loss in 2023 to a $38 million profit in 2024. This highlights the significant role international students play in supporting Australia’s higher education sector.
